The specter of protests has not dampened the temper of the nuptials of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sánchez in Venice. The multi-day affair, dubbed the “Marriage ceremony of the Century,” is reportedly costing upwards of $55 million and has drawn celeb friends from all over the world, in addition to vocal native protestors.
A few dozen native organizations—together with housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners, and college teams—have united beneath the banner “No House for Bezos.” They are saying that their metropolis is being handled as a billionaire’s playground and highlights wealth inequity. Their small-scale demonstrations have included hanging protest banners on iconic landmarks, and a Bezos dummy was floated down the Grand Canal in an Amazon field clutching money.
